Human Peace Sign Jewelry in Minnesota

September 7th, 2008

The most recent creation of peace sign jewelry was formed this past Thursday, September 4, at an event called Peace Island Picnic held at Harriet Island, Minnesota, just across the Mississippi from the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. This wonderful day of “good neighborliness and sanity” was a huge success despite an excessive and unnecessary display of police presence. Art, good food, and great music combined to create a truly peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for about 1,000 attendees. The idyllic day culminated in the formation of a human peace sign. Check out the fabulous picture and read more details about this event in this article in The Huffington Post.

Dick Bernard’s description will make you feel as if you were there. The contrast of the peaceful picnic scene to the Coast Guard gun boat patrolling the river, of the flying peace kites to the dark helicopters, is striking. Also striking is the minimal media coverage that events like this receive, which is one reason I want you all to know about it. I agree with Bernard’s “I am the media” philosophy and believe it is incumbent upon all of us to get the word out. Sure, there are those who cross the line and break windows to get media attention. But there are far more of us, I am certain, who maintain a non-violent approach and therefore often go unnoticed.

I hope that hearing about the success of this event will encourage others to organize similar events. As the number of peaceful gatherings increases everywhere, the world will become more peaceful. It is a slow process, but an enjoyable one. And I especially love that human peace sign jewelry - let’s keep making more and circulating those pictures!

Peace Sign Jewelry on a Poster?

September 2nd, 2008

Posters in Lebanon are displaying peace sign jewelry and other images this month. The Daily Star of Lebanon reported that the first poster contest in the Middle East is being held in Rmeileh, and the theme is peace, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the peace sign.

Close to 100 posters will be displayed for a month in booths at the La Voile beach resort. The contest was organized by the magazine ArabAd and was open to anyone creating a poster that included a peace sign. Small cash prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

The opening evening of the display featured the music and choreography of the Brazilian group Capoeira Sobreviventes singing words of peace. Beirut’s best graffiti artists sprayed three large canvases in an effort to elevate this form of street-art. A banner read “Peace Works”. Materials were available for people to create their own signs promoting peace and peace initiatives were promoted.

Visitors were deeply moved by the messages displayed on the posters, proving that people hunger for peace world-wide.

The 1st place winner was Ruel Sunga from the AGA advertising company in Dubai. Second was Joelle Jammal of Drive Communication in Beirut. Third went to Ricky Halabi of Kuwait.

Jammal expressed a longing for peace that I have always felt myself and I feel a connection with her even though we will never meet. That, I think, is the true benefit of an event like this, the uniting of people’s minds all over the world. We no longer have to dream in isolation.

Ghada Azzi, managing editor of ArabAd, said that promoting peace awareness in Lebanon was not easy. Though happy with the public response, she would have liked more participation from ad agencies. She plans to continue her efforts and to tour the Middle East to reach more people. Let’s hope the gentle message put forth by peace sign jewelry can turn some hearts around.

Peace Sign Jewelry at the Olympics

August 30th, 2008

I’ve been reading posts about Shawn Johnson, the Olympic gold medal winner in the balance beam who has been wearing peace sign jewelry, specifically peace sign earrings, in public lately. Surprisingly, there’s been quite a bit of controversy about those peace sign earrings. Some people actually believe that this sweet and talented young girl is somehow anti-American because she favors the peace sign. This is ridiculous! I believe that it is instead the height of patriotism to love your country enough to want peace for it and the world of which it is a part.

Peace is more than just the absence of war. It is about working together to make this nation the best it can be and about being a good neighbor. I think that people today are ready to take on this dream again, and that it is no coincidence that the peace sign is coming back into fashion. It reminds many of us of a time when the world was younger, life was simpler, and peace seemed possible. And fashion was fun!

I wore my old peace sign necklace to work today. It felt good, like an old friend. If you want to join Shawn and me in showing how you feel, I found these sterling silver earrings that you might like to try. Comfortable ear wires and very reasonably priced – click here to find out more or buy a pair. And smile - that’s peace sign jewelry too!

Vintage Peace Sign Jewelry

August 27th, 2008

This is an authentic piece of peace sign jewelry that my mother bought for me at Jordan Marsh in 1968 when I was 12 years old. I have always cherished what the peace sign stands for and believed in my youth that our generation would be the one to bring peace to the world. Though we’re not there yet, I still hold out the hope that each of us can spread the message of peace in small ways. On my blog I am collecting stories about people’s creative use of the peace sign and about efforts to promote non-violence in the world.

I’m wearing my necklace a lot these days. It feels good! Try digging out your old peace sign jewelry or buy a new piece and see what I mean!

Whirled Peace Sign Jewelry

August 17th, 2008

Here’s some peace sign jewelry for your lawn! I’d like to tell you about a creative effort I’ve discovered to express wishes for peace all over the world. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 1981 declaring an International Day of Peace. That day is September 21, and this year, in 2008, people all over the world will be continuing a tradition started in 2005. They will create pinwheels of all types and sizes, and plant them in the ground on this day, symbolizing the simple happiness of peace. Perhaps the pinwheel will come to be a new peace sign for our times.

The project, called Pinwheels for Peace has grown every year since 2005, and last year in 2007, 1.2 million pinwheels were planted. Click here to go to their website and get instructions for making your own pinwheel, photos of other pinwheel exhibitions, and more information about the project. Spread the word and forward this to anyone you know who may be interested in participating. Let’s plant our own peace sign jewelry and send peaceful thoughts all over the globe while gentle breezes spin our creations.

Peace Sign Jewelry For The U.S.

August 7th, 2008

I just read an amazing story on WKYC.com about a woman who is tracing a 22,000 mile peace sign on the U.S. on her scooter, essentially creating a giant piece of peace sign jewelry for our country. Alix Bryan is creating the largest peace sign in history while volunteering to serve meals, load disaster relief supplies and assist a recycling center along the way.

It’s wonderful that the public has supported her and she’s had company for parts of the journey. She’s obviously struck a chord in people who long for community and are tired of violence. One person even accompanied her for 1500 miles!

This isn’t just another anti-war protest, either. Her focus has been on promoting peace rather than specifically opposing war. You can read the whole story here. Go, Alix - adorn the world with peace sign jewelry!
